Most travelers require either a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before traveling to Canada. The requirement depends on nationality and travel purpose:
Visa-Exempt Country Citizens – Travelers from visa-waiver countries must obtain an eTA before boarding their flight to Canada.
Visa-Required Country Citizens – Must apply for and obtain a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) before traveling.
Transit Travelers – Some travelers transiting through Canadian airports may still need an eTA or TRV, even if they do not leave the airport.
A visa or eTA is generally unnecessary if you are:
A Canadian citizen with a valid Canadian passport.
A dual Canadian citizen (must travel with a valid Canadian passport).
A Canadian permanent resident (must travel with a valid PR card or Permanent Resident Travel Document).
A U.S. citizen entering Canada with a valid U.S. passport (though proof of funds and purpose of travel may be required).
Beyond visa or eTA requirements, all visitors must also:
Possess a valid passport (valid for the duration of stay, some airlines require 6 months’ validity).
Show evidence of onward or return travel (such as a confirmed return ticket).
Demonstrate sufficient financial resources for the duration of their visit (e.g., bank statements, credit cards).
Meet Canada’s health and character requirements (medical exam or police clearance may apply in some cases).
Entry may be refused to individuals who present risks to public health, security, or safety.
